THE STUDENT LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM Leaders walk their talk. |
|
Leadership in AthleticsSports have long been viewed as an important aspect of both character and leadership development—socially, morally and emotionally. When these goals are combined with an emphasis on physical fitness, it is no mystery as to why schools develop strong programs to support athletes and athletics. The spirit and booster programs cut deep into the fabric of the school. Generally they capitalize on the success of a given sports team to generate school pride and foster a greater sense of belonging among the athletes and non-athletes alike. At some schools however team pride is misdirected to a “win at all cost” attitude which usually results in fan hysteria and rallies that create more mean spiritedness than pep. A sport of and by itself will not build character, nor promote leadership. What is required are student athletes and coaches taking an active leadership role in their school community. Our Leadership in Athletics Conference has that in mind and more. Athletes are in the public eye. They are role models for their community. So much more is done to unite schools and to widen the sense of belonging at schools when student athletes take a leadership role. Those same student athletes greatly enhance their success on the playing fields when they exercise their citizenship in their school. In this program we will fully explore leadership as it applies on the playing field and in the school community. Our goal is to foster Citizen Athletes. Students who will make a difference for their school AND their team. This will be an experiential learning conference. The staff will be drawn from inside and outside the sports arena— including business and education leaders, successful college coaches, high school coaches and student athletes. The core curriculum will be student leadership and team building. We will focus on team building; group process; motivation; competition; assertiveness; organization; character; and attitude. If you are interested in participating in this program, please contact us.
