THE STUDENT LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM Leaders walk their talk. |
|
CONNECTIONSThe SLTP Theatrical TroupeLeadership is difficult to define - - yet, it is easy to delineate the skills and qualities that leaders must master. In fact it is too easy. There are more than enough skills and qualities to fulfill the requirements for graduate degree programs. So what should be included as an overview for high school student leaders? In other words, where do we begin, and which skills are THE most important? The requirements of student leadership are varied, yet there are some essential basic skills and understandings that all student leaders should possess. And with that in mind, the SLTP curriculum has developed and evolved over the years—we will use whatever strategy of lessoning we believe will best suit the lesson and the learner. Drawing, design, music, rhythm, dance, signing, drama, humor, singing and even sculpture (of a sort) has been found at one time or another to be just the right tool to teach a specific lesson. Traditionally we have used sign language as one of our best vehicles to teach acceptance. Recently the implementation of these techniques within SLTP’s teaching style has become much more visible through our play presentations of “bang, bang, you’re dead,” “Getting ready for real life,” and “stop, look and listen,” as well as the Connections presentation troupe. These special presentations have brought much more serious drama into the mix. All have proven to be remarkable tools enabling us to connect our lessons inspirationally. The Connections troupe is available to present any of SLTP’s plays for a reasonable fee—all proceeds are utilized to support the program. “Stop, look and listen,” is perhaps our most powerful and well known production. The subject matter is bullying. The plays are written by students for students. There is no attempt to be “preachy” nor is there an attempt to portray solutions for every situation. All of the SLTP productions are highly interactive and very “real.” Every audience is drawn in because the plays so accurately depict what goes on today in virtually all high schools. Because our staff are all volunteers and almost all of the actors are either in high school or college—play dates are limited and must be arranged long in advance. We suggest booking Fall dates in the Spring and vice versa. For more information about bringing Connections to your school, contact us.
