What we offer to parents of student leaders

Primarily we offer peace of mind.  We will provide each student with individual attention.   Our staff are well prepared, committed and dedicated.  Our learning environment is safe and accepting. Our affirmative approach allows for positive growth.

We also provide parents with opportunities to learn. On the final day of each of our summer conferences we invite parents to participate in a program designed to “peek behind the curtain.” The Parent Orientation Program reviews the lessons and approach taken with the students during their week of training. We believe that understanding what the students learned is essential to enable parents to become able supporters for their student leader. The Orientation Programs also explore the opportunities and challenges that the students face upon the completion of the program. We do not end our connection there. At the ReEnergizer Conference and the InterLead we offer a separate track of workshops for and by parents of student leaders.

Additionally we provide a monthly online newsletter for parents. The newsletter offers tips and suggestions to assist and nurture student leaders as well as information about scholarships and other opportunities.

Finally we offer involvement opportunities. Ours is an all volunteer program and we are always looking for help.

What we offer to Student Leaders

Leadership training is all about learning the skills necessary to make a difference. These skills are often referred to as “people skills” and the description fits. Leaders must learn to work with people as individuals, in groups and in all of the possible situations and circumstances. Leadership skills cover a very wide field - varying alphabetically from assertiveness to vision development.

The key to skill development is understanding that skills must be practiced.

Our approach is quite unique - - we examine each skill in relation to each of the other skills. That is, when we study and practice communication skills, we do so IN RELATION to solutions, to goals, to motivation, to teambuilding, to organization, to inclusion and so on.

The idea is to enable our students to make the connection of the relationship between the skills and their interdependence upon one another. We are more interested in application than theory. Our goal is to enable our students to be better leaders TODAY as well as tomorrow.

So, who should attend a program like this ?

Our answer is simple: any student or adviser who is interested in learning how to make a difference! Student leadership does not require a title. Nor is it defined through membership in certain activities. Nor is it defined by popularity. To that end, we do not believe that ANY one activity is THE most important activity in a school. Each activity helps to create the fabric of belonging, and therefore ALL of the activities are THE most important.

The majority of students who attend SLTP are very involved in their school and in their community. All are seeking to learn how TO DO more.

The willingness to learn is vital. So is the understanding that leadership is about DOING. Leaders are defined by what they do - - not by the titles they hold or by the organizations they belong to.

The only program requirements that exist, are based on experience:

  • Delegates to the LTC's - must be secondary students (junior high or high school).
  • Delegates to the ALC’s - must have completed the first level.
  • Delegates to the Adviser Program - must be practicing or aspiring coaches or advisers.
  • Delegates to the OTS - must be officers and /or advisers and have at least one other team member in attendance.

What each participant should have:

  • a desire to make a difference
  • a willingness to learn
  • enthusiasm
  • an acceptance of growth
  • a desire to master change
  • a dream to work on

What SLTP will provide:

  • an atmosphere of unconditional acceptance
  • significant learnings and understandings
  • the opportunity to practice what we teach
  • encouragement and support
