Ian's Wish,

“My wish is that more 'athletes and jocks' will attend SLTP in the future. Many of my closest friends fall into this category and many of these same friends will be captaining sports teams this year. The high level of competition and vigorous demands of a sports team breeds disrespect and a critical, negative culture. It takes a true leader to intervene and promote a change to culture and it’s even more difficult without the SLTP experience. It’s for this reason that my wish is to actively promote SLTP and show all that I’ve learned with my friends because this week was one that I’ll never forget.”
Ian Bonner, Wayland High School

Student Voices

“When seeing the positive changes in myself, and others around me, I can see that student leadership is the answer to a better future and a better present.”
Christina Barry, Tahanto High School

“Upon coming into SLTP, I didn’t know anyone in my crew and I was afraid that they might not like me.  What actually happened was the opposite.  I was comfortable around them before the first day was over!”
Qiuyin Ren, Ledyard High School

“This has been a life changing experience for me.  I was able to express my comments, concerns, and opinions because I was at a high comfort level.  I have to give most credit to the staff because breaking the ice when you first arrive was key.”
Samantha Iacobucci, Newington High School

“I’m beginning to think of SLTP as a charger.  One attends the program and then is all charged up with this drive to go and be a differencemaker.”
Erin Stanton, Tahanto High School

“What makes SLTP so special is that the staff truly believes in the message and is enthusiastic about sharing and teaching the curriculum to the campers.”
Skyler Ross, Westhill High School

“Everyone cares about each other at SLTP.  It is an open place where everyone can be themselves.  I feel comfortable to be the person I am and become the one I want to be.  I do not have to hide behind masks to please everyone.  Being myself is good enough for the SLTP family.”
Rachel Garrity, Kent School

“Before I came to SLTP, I was always afraid to voice my opinions, to stand up for what I believed in, even to disagree with people.  SLTP has taught me that it is okay – no, it is more than okay – it is great to have opinions and a voice with which to speak them.”
Amanda Ruggieri, Pilgrim High School

“I absolutely love the atmosphere that SLTP provides.  Not only is it perfect for learning leadership skills, but it is also the perfect place for me to truly be myself around others without worrying about being judged, and I think that it is important for everyone to feel that way.  Some place to have some sort of refuge where they don’t need to worry about having their ideas cast down or being excluded from the group.”
Amanda Spiewak, Shepard Hill High School

“Making a difference in the world, even if it’s for one person is what SLTP is all about.  I feel the leadership skills I have practiced and learned from SLTP will truly allow me to give this gift to other student leaders.”
Amanda Rode, Pilgrim High School
