Why SLTP?

The opening sentence on this web site actually answers the question.  It proclaims, “We are the definitive student leadership training program.”   How do we know that?  Well, we know what we DO.  We know what we have DONE.  Best of all we are aware of what our graduates do and have done.  We also know that we prepare longer and harder.  We constantly refine our techniques and methods. We research. We train all year.  Everything we do, we do with intention.

Our program enjoys the lowest student to staff ratio of any program in the country.  Since 1990 we have staged over 100 leadership conferences and we strive to learn from each one.

We learn how to increase the range of our outcomes.  Our staff's vision is “to change the world.”  Not with anything in mind as grandiose as world peace, but to do so by teaching students the skills to go back and make differences in their schools and communities. We know that each time an SLTP graduate includes a student who would not have been included then we have changed both students’ world.

We maintain a close associative relationship with our graduates.  It is through that contact that we can effectively measure how well we do.  The success of our graduates back in their schools and communities clearly backs our claim.

The curriculum at SLTP is different from any other program.  We teach all of the leadership skills in connection to each other.  Our schedule is a flow chart, every activity builds on and is connected to what came before and what follows.  Our faculty are immersed in our REAL Instructional philosophy, which we combine with William Purkey’s Invitational Techniques and strategies.

At future conferences we will hold a Teacher Orientation Program so that teachers and advisers can become more familiar with the lessons we teach and to help set expectations for their attending students.

The ReEnergizer, the DifferenceMaker Showcase, the Leadership in Athletics Conference, the Officer Training Seminar, the Core Toolbox Seminars, and naturally the Adviser Certification Conference are all open to teacher enrollment and all include workshops specific to activity advisers.
